Busby Family Christmas Quiz 2012

Merry Christmas from the Busby Family in Nashville!!!  We hope you are enjoying the holiday season and we wanted to share some of our highlights from 2012.  In honor of Devin being an eternal student, he decided to format this year’s newsletter multiple-choice style.  That way, everyone can share the testing pains he has had for the last 21 years of formal education. J  Who knows, maybe you’ll even learn something about our family’s year in the process!  Go on to the next post (the answer key) to grade your own quiz and then feel free to post your scores in the comments and we’ll get everyone’s grade back to them after we’ve had time to create the curve. J

a.      Atlanta, GA
b.      Louisville, KY
c.       New Caanan, CT
d.      New York, NY
e.      Newport, RI
f.        San Francisco, CA
** Atlanta, GA – 10/2012 family trip: visited the aquarium and the Coca-Cola museum
Louisville, KY – Haven’t been yet, but we’re still hoping to go
New Caanan, CT – 10/2012 family trip: visited Cathy’s sister April and her family
New York, NY – 2/2012 Cathy trip: “girls trip” with Melissa Winder and Loralee Warner
Newport, RI – 10/2012 family trip: day trip with April and Aaron during our jaunt to NE
San Francisco, CA – 2/2012 Devin/Cathy trip: McKinsey and Co. “Celebration Weekend”

     2.       Which of the following was NOT an experience associated with Devin and Cathy’s Caribbean cruise (commemorating their 5-year wedding anniversary) during May 2012?
a.       Staying one night in the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Key Biscayne before boarding the ship
b.      Enjoying “butterbeer” at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, FL
c.       Attending church in the Bahamas
d.      Snorkeling with octopi, sea turtles, tropical fish, and “Barry the Barracuda” in St. Thomas
e.      Getting food poisoning and missing their scheduled Regatta Cup Excursion in St. Maarten
**Devin and Cathy were lucky enough to enjoy a one-night stay at the Ritz in Key Biscayne during July, NOT during their summer anniversary getaway

     3.       Devin surprised Cathy on their 5-year wedding anniversary with all the following EXCEPT:
a.       Outing for breakfast followed by a sealing session at the Nashville  temple
b.      An appointment for a mani/pedi
c.       Dinner at an Italian restaurant in downtown Nashville
d.      An one-night stay at the historic Union Hotel in Nashville
e.      Wedding bands to go with Cathy’s engagement ring
**Two words: student debt.  You have to leave something for the 10-year anniversary, right?

     4.       The Busbys visited all the following places during their summer in California EXCEPT:
a.       Disneyland
b.      San Diego Wild Animal Park
c.       Sea World
d.      Santa Monica Pier
e.      Dodger Stadium
f.        Stan’s Donuts and Diddy Riese Cookies
g.       Carlsbad beach
h.      Mormon Battalion visitors’ center
**What a summer!  Disneyland (x2, and we had to see ALL the princesses), Santa Monica Pier with multiple friends, Dodger’s game with McKinsey’s southern California office, and if you haven’t tried the donuts at Stan’s in LA, you haven’t REALLY tried donuts.
Devin
     1.       Devin did all the following during his summer 2012 internship with McKinsey & Co. EXCEPT:
a.       Worked 10 weeks on an engagement with a healthcare client based in southern California
b.      Participated in various team-building events, including night deep sea fishing, numerous team dinners, and miniature golf

d.      Experienced sushi for the first time
e.      Explained his internship experiences in such a way that all his family members are sure that he didn’t work a minute of the entire summer
**Although Devin’s “home office” was in Los Angeles, the client site was in the Miami, FL area.  As a result, Devin got to experience all that the south Florida region has to offer, including incredible sushi, night deep sea fishing, not to mention 2 weekly 5-hour flights.  Devin’s tales of the experience have his parents convinced that he got through the summer without doing a lick of work!

     2.       Which of the following is NOT an activity or hobby that Devin enjoyed during 2012:

b.      Preparing Sunday school lessons and attending baptisms for his CTR 7 class
c.       “Apprenticing” with a friend to build a corner bookshelf from an old door
d.      Playing racquetball weekly with a friend and running 3x per week to stay in shape
**Trick question: 3x per week running was the goal, but Preston’s arrival and a busy school schedule provided Devin with plenty of excuses to avoid 3x per week running.  2013 goal, perhaps?
     3.       T/F: The summer internship with McKinsey turned Devin’s previous career plans upside-down.
**True: Devin enjoyed the summer experience so much that he now plans to join McKinsey’s Washington, D.C. office full-time upon graduating from medical school in 2014

     1.       During her February trip to New York with her friends from Durham, Cathy visited all the following EXCEPT:
a.       Eataly (Mario Batali’s NYC restaurant)
b.      Levain Bakery
c.       Carnegie Deli
d.      Broadway (to see “Memphis” & “Phantom”)
e.      The “Live! with Kelly” Show
f.        The Shake Shack (x2)
g.       Empire State Building
h.      Brooklyn Bridge
**Cathy was able to do almost everything on her to-do list but left some things for the next NYC trip.  And if you are ever in the city, PLEASE do yourself a favor and go to Levain and get the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip cookie.  It’s ¼ pound of sinful deliciousness.  And go to Shake Shack.  And Eataly.  And basically everywhere in NYC.

     2.       Cathy had baby Preston without the assistance of an epidural because:
a.       Cathy is as scared of the long epidural needle as she is of the pains of childbirth
b.      She wanted to experience “natural childbirth”
c.       The anesthesiologist on-call could not be reached when Cathy requested the epidural
d.      Devin was certain that her overnight contractions were only “false labor” and he convinced her that going in to the hospital first thing in the morning was not a good idea
**One of the many cons of having a medical student husband…

     3.       Cathy’s stay-at-home experience with the three little ones could be accurately described as:
a.       “I’ve Seen Better Days”
b.      “Easy Like Sunday Morning”
c.       “The End of the World as we Know It”
d.      “Crazy Train”
**So far, the adjustment has been incredibly smooth.  Are we speaking too soon?
Kylie
     1.       Each of the following happened to Kylie during 2012 EXCEPT:
a.       She started preschool in September and has loved learning new songs in “chapel”
b.      She overcame her pickiness with new foods and often requests a 2nd helping of vegetables
c.       She turned 4 years old in August and celebrated with a princess party with friends
d.      She entered primary in January and participated in her first primary program in October
e.      She broke her arm in May when she fell off the playground
**Kylie asking for a 2nd helping of veggies???  That will be the day…

     2.       Kylie’s favorite hobbies include all the following EXCEPT:
a.       Pretending to be Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) or Holley Shiftwell (Cars 2)
b.      Drawing, painting, reading, and coloring pictures
c.       Writing “notes” to Mom and Dad
d.      Playing hide-and-go seek or riding bikes with Emmy and Dad
e.      All of the above are hobbies that Kylie actually enjoys
**The notes are especially awesome: most include a core set of words/names that she knows coupled with gibberish.
Emmy
     1.       Emmy did all of the following during 2012 EXCEPT:
a.       Turned 1 in February and started nursery in August
b.      Started to speak in complete sentences in early December
c.       Navigated most of the year with some bump or bruise on her face
d.      Gave up her binky
e.      Drew her first picture
**Oh how we dread the day that we have to help rid her of the binky…

     2.       Which of the following is NOT one of Emmy’s favorite things:
a.       Being dropped off at nursery
b.      Cars
c.       Yellow
d.      Eating
e.      Reading books
**Emmy does GREAT after about 5 minutes in nursery; those first 5 minutes are helping to perfect our ward nursery leaders.

Preston
     1.       Preston averages one stretch of __ hours of continuous sleep during the night.
a.       3
b.      5
c.       7
d.      12
**What a great baby!  12 hours would be fantastic, but he is only 6 weeks old.

We feel so grateful for all the wonderful blessings that our family received during 2012.  We are especially grateful for Jesus Christ and his restored gospel, which blesses our lives each day with hope, perspective, and guidance for our growing family.  May you and yours feel the joy of Christmas at this season and throughout 2013!
